Jay Black on the Dawgs

All questions are fair after the Dawgs implode in Jacksonville

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — I have a computer screen full of stats and notes to explain how truly awful Georgia’s offense played against Florida, but this might be the most damning number of all.

Georgia had 59 more total yards in last year game with Faton Bauta making his one and only start at quarterback than it did this year.

That decision might have been the last straw in the Mark Richt Era. This game will cast plenty of doubt on the new one.

Last year’s game was the worst I’ve ever seen a Georgia offense look. Until tonight.

Without fail, the Gators always seem [More]

Top three things to know: Georgia vs. No. 14 Florida

Can Nick Chubb take advantage of Florida’s injuries?

I can’t imagine Georgia’s best player was too thrilled with 40 rushing yards against Vanderbilt. So now the Dawgs have to face the defense that’s allowed the second fewest yards and points in the nation.

So wahoo.

However, the only ranked team Florida has played (Tennessee) hung 38 on its defense. So is this group good or are there opponents just weak?

Chubb has the opportunity to get back on track because Florida’s front seven is still very beat up. Leading tackler Jarrad Davis may or may not play with a bad ankle. DE Bryan Cox [More]

How much does Smart value the Gator Game

  • 7:21 am Friday, October 28th, 2016 by Jay Black

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — It’s strange feeling isn’t it?

It’s Florida week. It’s the “we can’t call it the World Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party so we’re going to try something really boring” week (anything to sell a T-Shirt). And it feels so very weird.

Georgia has only one role in this game. Spoiler.

The Dawgs have no realistic chance to go to the SEC championship. Making a great bowl game is out the window. So all that’s left is to make sure Florida can’t have nice things either.

This is what happens when you lose to Vanderbilt.

Kirby Smart’s ’embarrassed’ and he’s not the only one

  • 6:10 pm Saturday, October 15th, 2016 by Jay Black

ATHENS — “I’ll be honest with you,” says a guy in a UGA visor moments after the worst loss on this field in a decade, “I’m sick to my stomach. I’m embarrassed by the performance.”

That could be any UGA fan (with a few more expletives). That quote could come from any Georgia player.

Or it could come from the man responsible. For better or worse.

“I’m the leader of the organization and I take full responsibility,” says Kirby Smart on the UGA radio network.

GAMEDAY LIVE: Vanderbilt at Georgia

3:19 — FINAL SCORE: Vanderbilt 17, Georgia 16

3:18 — Georgia out gained Vandy by 246 yards. And will lose.

3:16 — The answer is a pitch to McKenzie with Chubb at FB. It didn’t work. Vandy ball.

3:12 — 4th and 1 from the 41. Game on the line. What’s your call?

3:10 — Eason with 337 yards, a career high.

3:10 — Eason on 4th and 12 hits Godwin over the middle to keep the game alive.

Top 3 things to know: Vanderbilt vs. Georgia

  • 8:03 pm Friday, October 14th, 2016 by Jay Black

Is a short week really a factor?

Even with one fewer day to prepare for Vanderbilt, Georgia should dominate this game.

The Commodores lost to Georgia Tech by 31. Tech isn’t that good.

But Georgia hasn’t dominated anybody yet.

Kirby Smart was a little concerned about losing this day when the South Carolina mess was getting sorted out because, well, coaches are always bothered by a breakup of the routine.

“I wouldn’t say (there were) any major issues,” said Smart. “Just some longer hours for the coaches, making decisions quicker than you’re comfortable with. You’ve got to work quicker. We started on the bus on [More]

Hoopla and all, Dawgs first half goes as expected

  • 11:27 pm Thursday, October 13th, 2016 by Jay Black

It’s not often in college football that a team actually does what you expect them to do (unless you’re Alabama).

That’s what makes this thing so much fun.

In August, you think you know which ones you will win and which ones you won’t. And every year you are reminded that nobody knows anything.

Except for the first six games of the “New Era” in Georgia football.

There was so much hype, so much talk, so much excitement about how the season would go because, that’s what happens when you get something new.

And the result has been — well — extremely predictable.

A strange week ends with a strange win

Nick Chubb celebrates one of his two TDs in the win over South Carolina

COLUMBIA, S.C. — So with Georgia unbeaten on this day of the week, is it time to try and move the Florida game to Sunday’s now?

Oh wait, Florida won’t move football games. Never mind.

This week has been so weird that it deserved to end with a game just as bizarre.

Georgia runs for 326 yards, the most in an SEC since 2007. It out rushed South Carolina by 296 yards.

That’s good.

The Dawgs defense had eight tackles for a loss and five sacks (both season highs), while their offensive [More]
